Wiggle your fingers. Pick up the closest object to you and place it down somewhere else.
The mind-boggling amount of eletrochemistry that occured to allow you to interpret the above texts and execute them cannot be overstated. Millions and billions of teeny little control systems sang in unified harmony, moving charges, ions, and molecules, breaking and forming bonds, all under the hoods of a million abstraction layers upon layers such that, from your point of view, all you had to do was to think to do the action, and your body did the rest. You have the ability to turn thoughts seamlessly into manipulations of the physical world around you; You can move objects at will. All you have to do is to think it.
Such an ability is familiar to the fantasy enthusiast. It's telekinesis. The ability to move objects with your mind.
Oh, no no. That's different. You can't be touching the objects you're moving.
Sure, let's pretend you weren't just levitating an object through the sub-nanoscale resolution repulsion field that you always have at the ready on your fingertips and across your whole body. And for that matter maybe the heavy bag you'd wear on your back isn't just billions and trillions of molecules hanging on to each other by sheer electric attraction, thereby holding assortments of tools and gadgets and resources to your body via a literally force field. Thankfully even then you and the world around you are still fully enveloped in an all-premeating electromagnetic field, and you have the ability to wiggle waves into this field to make physical things around you move and turn and fly and explode and wiggle more waves to make more things move. Pick up a remote controller and move ten tons of steel into the air; Press a button and unleash gigajoules of energy per second to send a field-wiggling machine screaming into the cosmos at tens of thousands of kilometers per hour; Turn on your personal multi-modal field-wiggling machine to control gadgets around you without touching and tap into the planet-wide field-wiggling network to communicate with people all over the world instantly and... Oh wait that's telepathy. I'm getting ahead of myself.
This is for all the awestruck kids out there watching superhero films and reading fantasy novels and wishing they had their fictional heroes' superpowers. You have literal superpowers too, and you can massively upgrade and expand and compound them with some intentful study and practice. My big obsession as a kid was the Harry Potter series, and oh how I dreamt to be able to attend a wizarding school and learn to wield magical powers! If I lived in such a wizarding world, oh how hard I'd study and work and practice to perfect my spellcasting and potionmaking and broomriding!
Interestingly enough, for all the times I've read Harry Potter, I don't recall any magical character expressing general appreciation for the magical superpowers they get to possess and wield. Ironically, the closest such example is Arthur Weasly, a wizard, expressing enthusiastic appreciation for the non-magical peoples' ability to invent technologies and live without magic.
If everyone had superpowers, no one would appreciate them. We have superpowers that the strongest superheroes can't even dream of. Furthermore, we use them to develop more and stronger superpowers in a perpetual positive feedback loop.
Until we don't; Until enough of us are bored to death with our current superpowers that we use them to saturate our mind and body with the fulfillment of all its desires so that we have no desires left for growing and improving and making new superpowers; Until we all take our mind-boggling superpowers for granted and we look at two-dimensional characters in capes and robes doing mere shadows of what we could do and we yearn to live lives like theirs.
That must not happen. For my part in helping to prevent so and encouraging cycles of superpower development forevermore for the human race, I will keep an ongoing list of my favourite real-life superpowers we possess and wield as indiviuals, teams, and as a species below, as a reminder of what we can do, and as an inspiration of superpowers for kids to aspire to rather than fictional ones. As you read the list and as you go on with your life, take notice of the countless other superpowers you wield on a regular basis. Maybe preserve them with your superpower of thought preservation or share them with your superpower of telepathy.
A (Never Complete) List of Human Superpowers:
- Electromagnetic-field-jigglation at fast enough frequencies such that objects become visible to our eyes. And also at even faster frequencies such that we can see through objects our eyes cannot.
- The superpower to read texts from ancient, carbonized, rolled-up scrolls without opening them.
- Arbitrary manipulation of steel (ex. via a welder and torch).
- Any tool or equipment, when used long enough, often starts to feel like an extension of your body as the brain develops strong neural pathways for how your body interacts with that tool/equipment to achieve the desired output (i.e. "muscle memory"). When you drive a car long enough, you no longer think "I need to turn the wheel to such an angle and then press the gas pedal this much and continuously poll the distance between my car and the car in front of me" but rather just "I need to get to XYZ" and your body/car does the rest. This melting of the flesh-to-machine interface is identical to the tsaheylu process in Avatar, and grants us the superpower of travelling at 100+km/h in an artificial climate of our choosing.
- The same goes for phones and computers. We have the superpowers of performing vast quantities of calculations every second, speaking and meeting in real time with far away people, accessing records and data and answers to our questions in an instant. Of course, our current interfaces with phones and computers are severely bottlenecked by the time constants of muscles in our hands and arms, and they often leak. New and more powerful abstraction layers between humans and machines are fast coming on the horizon, but they'll probably also cease to feel like absurd superpowers within a generation or two.
- We have the superpower of accurately predicting the future.
- Night vision.
- Underwater breathing.
- We can control the weather.
- We can edit the fundamental genetic encoding of all living beings!??!?! We can manipulate such genetic material to prevent diseases and upgrade ourself biologically!!!?!?!?!?!??!?! WE CAN HEAL LIVING THINGS AND BRING THEM BACK FROM THE BRINK OF DEATH!!!!!!!!????!?!! WE ARE REVIVING EXTINCT FRICKING ANIMALS??????????????????!!!! And like forget surgeries and medicine and therapy, if you cut your finger it will literally heal itself and look like nothing happened after a few days?????? DON'T YOU SEE IT YET?????? WE HAVE GODDAMN SUPERPOWERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
